2. HEALTH 1993-2002

2.1 Primary health services

• 63 Rural health clinics built and furnished
• More than 315,000 people have now access to primary health care facilities
• 11% of primary health service coverage is attributed to these clinics
• One health center constructed to serve over 100,000 people in the western zone of the region

2.2 Construction of modern Hospital & supply of equipments and drugs

• One modern zonal hospital that improved access for referral services to more than 900,000 people is recently inaugurated and made operational in the southern zone of Tigrai
• Medical equipments and drugs worth of birr 18 million birr acquired and distributed to hospitals

2.3 Maternal and Child Health

• 992 Traditional Birth Attendants (TBA), Community Health Agents (CHA) and Influential Village Mothers (IVM) trained and equipped. Refresher courses given to 69 experienced Traditional Birth Attendants to assist women of childbearing age, to have access to prenatal care, and referral of problem pregnancies.
• Training, Treatment and Research on Acute Respiratory Infection /ARI/ Targeted to over 25,000 children under the age of 5 and as an outgrowth of ARI the Integrated Management of Childhood Illnesses (IMCI) serving for over 40,000 under 5 children undergoing in two weredas
• Aynalem Integrated Rural Development Programme is implemented to fight against malnutrition and to promote maternal and child health care
2.4 HIV/AIDS Prevention and Control

• 6,000 out of school youth, a hard to reach group, educated by peer educators through their own drama, pamphlets & posters to raise their awareness on HIV/AIDS infection.
• Prevention and control of HIV/AIDS awareness raising programs conducted among 11,000 school children to bring about behavioral changes who are the " windows of hope" through drama production, strengthening of anti AIDS clubs, supply of posters and stickers etc.
• Support for People Living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA) and other anti AIDS promoters who voluntarily involve in awareness raising
• Frequent anti HIV/AIDS sensitization programmes are going on targeting at the youth using the artistic skill of circus Tigrai.
